In Love with 101 Cookbooks

As many of you know, I am a quasi-vegetarian...ok, this might sound like being half pregnant and I guess in a way it is. I would say that 80% of my diet is non-animal. While I do have fish a few times a week, the only time I eat meat is if I am at a dinner party. I eat cheese occasionally and rarely use milk products (finally off the coffee!). Just remember, 18% of greenhouse gases are produced by animal production (mostly cows)...one of the biggest impacts we can have on the environment is reducing our consumption of meat...for more on this topic see Veg Out.

The best thing about being a quasi-vegetarian is experimenting with new recipes (previously, vegetarian curry was the extent of my repertoire). One of my favourite places for recipes is 101 Cookbooks by Heidi Swanson (pictured). Besides being totally gorgeous, she is incredibly talented...photographer, designer, writer (what doesn't she do!) and has won countless awards. Her website is devoted to vegetarian cooking with a bit of travel to exotic places thrown in. Here is a sample of some of her recipes...Giant Black Bean Salas, Porcini Mushroom Soup, Vegetarian Tortilla Soup, Lentil Almond Stirfry, Lemon Chickpea Stirfry, Baked Sweet Potato Falafel...next recipe I am going to try is her Marathon Cookies which I think will be perfect for the kids lunchbox. Yum...Let me know if you have any good vegetarian recipes. Bon Appetit. xxx

Hi Patty,

I love visiting your blog, it's always a feast of all things feminine and divine!

I know what you mean about being quasi-vegetarian, I'm trying to cut down on meat too but it can be so hard! I was looking for a great vegetarian cookbook, thanks for recommending Heidi Swanson's recipes!

We try to be meat-free 1-2 days a week. I just cooked up Karen Martini's Red bean and capsicum hot pot and it's great. Big thumbs up from my two toddlers (I left out the hot chilli of course).

Hi Patty

My name is Jess, I am from Porter Novelli Adelaide, a PR company working with natural personal care company Burt’s Bees. We are about to launch an online survey asking Australian consumers about your concerns and attitudes to ‘natural’ ingredients – what ‘natural’ means to you in personal care products (such as hair, face and body products) and what matters about it. Between the people at Burt’s Bees and ourselves, we’ve decided we need to know from the source (you and your readers) so we’re posting here to ask if we may provide more information about the survey and a link via this site.

All sorts of assumptions get made in marketing and both Burt’s Bees and Porter Novelli Adelaide have decided it’s about time someone actually asked these questions of real consumers. We will share what we learn with you and with the health and beauty media, and we’ll post it on the Burt’s Bees website too. (A similar survey in the US, by the way, led to Burt’s Bees working with other major natural personal care companies to develop a national standard for ‘natural’ via the Natural Products Association)

What do you think? We would love to hear your feedback. You can contact us at Adelaide@porternovellisa.com.au.

Many thanks,
Jessie Morris

My husband and I are on the quasi-vegetarian boat as well. I thought it would be much harder but I'm enjoying the change. I'll have to check out the book as well. Thanks for the recommendation!

Terrific to hear that people make a big efford to help the environment.

For another article about healthy and nutricious foods and the best for the environment, have a look at this green journal:
